How Expats Can Cash Checks From the IRS While Abroad

Ines Zemelman, EA

If you are able to use direct deposit, more power to you and this article is not for you. If you are in the US, cashing checks is easy, but if you are residing abroad, it may prove difficult in some cases.

While we are not a financial institution, we have compiled a list of helpful tips to help ensure you can utilize the funds sent to you from the IRS.

  • Deposit to a bank account if they accept US checks (easy!)
  • Paypal now offers to cash your US Stimulus Checks. With a Paypal account, you can easily link it and transfer money to your bank account in the country you live
  • Open a credit union account with, for example, the State Department Federal Credit Union (for which you can become eligible by joining American Citizens Abroad), or a bank such as USAA Savings Bank that accommodates US citizens abroad
  • Open a TransferWise Borderless account, which gives you a USA bank account number. Some people have had success with getting tax refunds in that account

Expat filing deadline is July 15th. If you still need to file, contact Taxes For Expats.
