I just found out that Nathan isn't with us anymore. When I was living in Sumpan, where he also lived, we got to know each other at the local bakery/coffeeshop. Most mornings we would have breakfast together, and developed over time a friendship. He was a humble and simple man happy with what he had. After moving away from Sweden though we lost contact and from now and then I've wondered about Nathan. Now what I feared was acknowledged. Due to his age he has left us. I'm sure he is among friends now.

RIP, Nathaniel Richardson

Dear Adrianne,

Thanks so very much for posting about Mamie Hyatt. I found your blog by Googling Mamie Hyatt, Stockholm, or something like that. The news of Mamie's passing is so immeasurably sad and her loss is felt deeply here at Tufts where we were incredibly fond and proud of her.

I was chair of the Department of Art and Art History at Tufts University during part of the time Mamie was working toward her Masters degree with us, and I worked closely with her at times, most particularly in her prep for taking our Masters Comprehensive Exams. I kept in touch with her on occasion after she received her degree and was delighted to see her land in the PhD program at BU where she seemed to be thriving. I only saw her sporadically since her Tufts graduation but we maintained warm connections and I so looked forward to her continuing in the field, finding her professional place as an art historian and contributing so well, as I knew she would, and of course had already.

We here at the department who worked with Mamie are devastated by this news. Thanks for the beautiful photos, and the warm comments on Mamie and the remembrance in The Mamie FActor 3. It's lovely to think of Mamie making such great connections in Stockholm.

Best wishes,

Eric

I met her at the Berlin Conference for Fulbright scholars. When I shared with her that my work focused largely on Phenomenology she enthusiastically shared with me how this methodology plays a role in her own work. I was looking forward to seeing her again this coming week, while in town for the Consciousness conference.

Rest in Peace, Mamie.

ART/HEART-History for Mamie Hyatt and the seed will grow.
The 20 th april 2011, JÄRNA (Stockholm) Sweden

Mamie Hyatt Young art historian and dynamic curator, deeply engaged in philosophical and art matter, curious, communicative and comprehensive, a delicate art connoisseur have lived us at the age of 28 years and leave us a creative world, in an other time and other space, a world to built to reminding her presence and to be proud of it.

She followed in a way the Art of the life, catching the beauty in every days situations and recording them, with a poetic writing as well as with a purely scientific knowledge and methods. Beauty in classical art forms as well as contemporary figurative art expressions. She loved Rembrandt as well as English Pop Art, Erickson Peña or Anne Sofie Sidén , Harvey Cropper och my works, all friends of art, heart or friends of the soul.

I never heard somebody talking so well, so strict and so deep about, for example, my recent art works with all the references, the historical and the philosophical associations and catch clearly the meaning of the artist message that is contained inside the art work in different layer.

And when she mentioned that she have been studding my art works at the faculty of art history at the Boston University. I have been very pleased to hear that and understood that there is something strange with life and road crossing have there meanings. Sensibility and aware of the moment we hade several artistic discussions of great values.

Or when she make som research on Harveys Crooper (common friend) Art works with mixed associations from Rembrandt to the American art movements of the 70 s and all artefacts.

She has sharply eyes and could notice that I, for example, changed very tiny details in my artwork comparing to the reproduction in a published book. She was very glad to have seen and remarking it.

We had common project under production like R/Evolution : Classified. An analysis, documentations and results of what make things evolutes in an art context and if the Revolution was part of it?
Re-Evolution to begin again, to grow again, maybe makes the same mistakes (based on knowledge and experiences) or to find new ways.
Apolitical, unreligious and uneconomical project that should travel in 5 continents to see, to awaken debate on mixed cultures expressions in time and space where experiment, research over art values and they benefits to feelings, witness and knowledge are the base of her thesis.

An universal art project through time and space.

The history will be repeating and we will discover new answers and solutions. The history is continuing for Mamie Hyatt through our friends, colleagues and space travellers.

Have a beautiful trip Mamie………………You leaved us a seed we will take care.

The Mamie Factor what a special name I must say, but a special girl needs a special name. Mamie was what Sweden needed a smiling energetic amazing person! She loved this country and I just loved watching her in such awe with everything she saw. She was so excited to have her first Swedish Summer experience with all of us, but God could not wait until the Summer he needed her now, We will all miss her dearly!

Sadly its not gotten any better. In fact it has gotten worst with the aids infection going up.

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1906000,00.html
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jun/17/south-africa-rape-survey

Even our president Jacob Zuma are raping women. Now I'm a proud Zulu woman but i don't hold with our culture of men having many wifes and using us as they please.

Jacob Zuma, is a bit of a xenophobe/racist as well, now i know that many American blacks thinks Robert Mugabe is a good man for kicking all the Asians and white people out and "keeping Africa black". But realistic that would cripple South Africa as it did to Zimbabwe and Jacob Zuma looks like he's going the same way by letting all the terrible violence towards immigrants and minorities go by unpunished.

I'm sorry if I'm babble on, I'm expecting my babies in next two weeks and I have been home for the last week bored out of my mind preparing for the babies :)

No, we don't let fear run our lives. We walk out everyday not knowing what we will face even regardless of the circumstances we live in. A sniper's bullet, a drunk driver, a fall down a flight of stairs: all potentially deadly. With something like overtly racists laws - you know who most of your enemies are. A coward shooting people from afar, it could be your neighbor who wouldn't have th guts to let you know he hates you.

It is sad but as you said the reality was young girls getting raped was not newsworthy in SA at that time (don't know if it has changed). I am relieved that a sniper in Malmö is still newsworthy in Sweden.

And I really have to say this as well, sense I live in Malmö even if it's in a house in the suburbs.

I'm not really afraid of this guy or anyone like this. Even after 10 years in Sweden I'm still amazed that this kind of things still end up in the news and people pull together and help each other out and speak out against the violence.

Look, one guy with a gun even if I'm a target in his eyes, this is not going to scare me. Apartheid ended when I was 16, I survived that ****. And I survived the rapes and murders that went up by a lot in my neighborhood after Apartheid ended. Well partly because I had three big brothers that went with me whenever I had to do something when it was late.

I know a girl who was 15 years old in my old school that went to a club and got dragged into the back room and hung up by the ceiling and raped to death by four guys. That did not even make the local news. So I'm sure as hell is not going to be afraid of one guy.

Sweden just has been way to me for me to just go away, Got my free university degree, found myself a wonderful and loving husband and I don't have to raise my kids in a destructive environment (partly because they would be considered coloured in SA). Even if you have to deal with ignorant people once in a while, I had two drunk Middle eastern guys last week touch my hair and pull my braids sitting just behind me on the buss. Like I wouldn't feel it.

There it just had to come out.

Maybe I should get a blog.

Oops! We had this same problem in the pantry in our last house. The water (or whatever) that collects at the bottom of that part of the pipe reeked to high heaven. I think we did something like that, too, to solve it. I'm glad that now the washing machine (and all potentially connecting pipes) are in the basement.... :o)

Hej Anna! Good luck with your move to Stockholm. This course has the last enrollment this month. Here is the link to information about SFI (Swedish For Immigrants):
http://www.stockholm.se/ForskolaSkola/Svenska-f...

The course I am taking is part of SFI and branches off at the next level. Don't let anyone tell you bad things about SFI. The key is getting a good teacher (isn't it the same with anything?) and being in a class with motivated students. The good things is that you can work hard and test out of your level a few times during the course so that you don't have to stay stuck.

Funny. When I just asked a friend how he was doing in Stockholm he said "besides the weather and the people I am fine". It is telling that, when put that bluntly, someone needs to come up with the good stuff to balance it.
